What size wetsuit should I get?
I’m 6’1″ and about 210-215, athletic build with broad shoulders. It looks like most of the size charts are recommending XL @ 5’11″- 6’1″ and 190-210, or XXL @ 6’1″- 6’3″ and 210-230. I have an old XL suit that worked for me a while back, but I’m right in between. Not sure how wetsuits run these days. I’m afraid the XXL would be too big.
You will definitely need to try them on. The suggestions are generally good, but everyone is built a little different and you want to make sure it fits everywhere.
This next thing might sound silly, but its something you should seriously consider. Over the next year do you think you’re going to be gaining or loosing weight. For example, if you just started a diet, it might be worth it to go the step down. However, I have know guys buying wetsuits after college where they knew they would not be as active in other sports and figured they would put on 10-15 pounds. If you’re right in the middle of a suit’s range, this isn’t an issue, but it is something to keep in mind.
If its a close call, I always try and size down with wetsuits. The material will stretch a little bit and I would rather have something a little tight than have water coming in. This works well with zip up suits, but the kind where you crawl through the neck can’t take a ton of stretching so for those I would say go on the larger size.
My recommendation for you is the XL, but you really should go try them both on, any surf shop will be happy to help you out there.
