How To Do Metal Detecting During The Rainy Season
Maybe you’ve been alone all winter, or not. But as spring approaches, you’re just raring to go and take your metal detector out for a spin. The issue is, spring often does mean rain. What you can do? No need to give up a treasure-hunting trip. Whether you had something elaborately planned or just thinking of combing the beach, rain does not need to stop you.
First, it could be nice to use a waterproof metal detector, or even a water repellent rain cover; but in case you don’t have it or it’s too late to buy or you’re simply not interested in shelling our money for it, there’s a quick fix. Plastic bags. A regular plastic zipper bag and a couple of elastic bands, and you’re all set. It’s also possible to stash a couple of these baggies in your vehicle for those sudden rain showers.
If you actually take pleasure in slogging through rain soaked sand or earth, then going metal detecting under the rain shouldn’t be a hardship for you. If not, you could compensate by being properly outfitted. If a wetsuit isn’t called for or you just don’t like putting them on, you can choose a rain suit. You are more likely to need a rain suit than merely just a rain jacket. Where a rain jacket will protect your top half, it’ll leave your pants exposed. It won’t be for long and you will have soaked pants that are also heavy. A hat with wide brims or a cap will help a lot as it keep away rain from your face and eyes.
Unless you’re out in during a heavy downpour, the usual headphones will do. If you own a pair of waterproof ones, then that’s one less thing to consider. Headphones are necessary for regular hunting trips but more so in the rain. It can make you focus more and block out the consistent falling of raindrops.
The rain can be your treasure-hunting ally in a few ways: it loosens the soil and moves deeply entombed items around, possibly, closer to the top; also, wet ground is a lot more conducive and can lead your metal detector to much deeper targets that you otherwise, might miss.
