Do you have to have a boom to water ski?

we have a bass boat, and i would like to start water skiing. the problem is, if we attach the ski rope to the hooks on the back of the boat, they would be down low, about 5 inches off the water. Do you have to have a boom or one of those tower things, or can the rope be close to the water?

you don’t want a tower for skiing. The rope would be better a little higher but at a beginner / intermediate skill level it will work fine. a boom is completely unnecessary.
