Used Surfboards Gold Coast Guide For The Novice
If you are new to surfing and just starting to hit the water, firstly congratulations, it truly is one of the greatest sporting activities that you can experience, and the rewards that come with catching a good wave can be remembered for a long time.
So here is a little guide for those that have decided that, okay, I have had a go and think I want to get my own surfboard.
Now if you have been learning on a foam surfboard you may now want to go to a fibreglass board. This will let you take your surfing to the next level. They will trim faster through the wave, be easier to turn (in the long run) and give you the ability to do manoeuvres that are not possible on larger, learning foam boards.
The first thing you will want to do is to go and speak with a used surfboard shop, there they can advise you on what dimensions will work best for you as a novice. One thing you do not want to do here is to get your ambitions mixed up with your capabilities. This can happen and people end up on surfboards that are far too small and light and make the learning curve extra hard.
This is where the sound advice from an expert will come in handy.
But here are some tips that you can use if you do not have the chance to speak with someone.
You really want to make sure that the surfboard you are looking at has enough volume to comfortably float you. What this means essentially is the thickness of the surfboard and when you are starting out this will give the board extra stability which will help with paddling and even just sitting on the board. So, trust me when I say don’t go for a thin surfboard until you have mastered a board with more volume.
The other important aspect is the length of the board, you may notice that a lot of good surfers will surf a board that is roughly the same height as them and in some cases smaller, now for you this is not a good idea, except if you are going for a fish style of surfboard (these are smaller and much wider and go well in smaller surf). But if you want a conventional style of modern surfboard then make sure that the surfboard is at least a couple of inches taller than you.
The longer the board, the easier you will find it to paddle and also get onto waves easier, which when you’re learning is a good thing. The wider the board the more stability you will gain, maintaining a steady platform as you leap to your feet is a great help.
There are a lot of other aspects involved with surfboards, but whilst you are starting out the two elements above are the most important. Then, once you get better you can start experimenting with other areas.
Now for pricing of a used surfboard, there are many variables here, mainly condition and the brand of the board. If a board has not been looked after and has a lot of damage it could start at around $50 and on the other hand if a board is in relatively new condition and a reputable brand you could spend as much as $600.
I recommend that if you spend around $300-$450. You will get a good surfboard that will get you through the initial learning period.
