Back grip thing on surfboard?
I know this question will sound very stupid to a lot of you but I just started surfing 2 months ago (im 12) and theres like a grip on my surf board on the back and I was wondering what the purpose of that was for. I thought it was to put your back foot on to grip it but I tried doing that and my board sunk back. Can someone please explain to me what it is for? Thanks 
That grip is called a traction pad. Most surfers put them on short boards and they usually have a bump going down the middle where the stringer is (the wood line on your surfboard) as well as a bump on the end parallel to the tail of your surfboard. The shape can vary from company to company, but that is the shape I usually come across.
Its purpose is to give shortboarders more traction when they do more vertical maneuvers. The bumps/blocks are something for the surfers to push up against. When you get better and start doing harder turns, the traction pad will come into play a lot and help you out.
The reason why your board sunk back is because when you put weight on your back foot, you are essentially putting on the brakes. That will cause you to sink back and the wave will pass by you. You need to put weight on your front foot so that you can get down the face. You will use your traction pad most when you put weight on your back foot when doing hard maneuvers like cutbacks, snaps, etc.
